Sweater Colour Trends & Working to Pantone with Your Manufacturer

Colour is the first thing a shopper sees and the last thing most buyers get right. A trend colour chosen from a runway photo or a mood board can look perfect on screen and arrive from the factory as something the merchandiser never approved. The gap is almost never the factory's skill — it is the handover. This guide covers how seasonal palettes work, how to communicate a shade in a way a knitwear mill can reproduce, and how to keep colour under control across a multi-colour program.
How seasonal palettes actually get built
Most knitwear ranges settle into three tonal groups, and understanding the logic makes it easier to buy trends without chasing every one.
- Grounding neutrals — camel, oatmeal, ecru, charcoal and off-white. These carry the volume and rarely date. Build 50–60% of a sweater range here.
- Soft mid tones — dusty rose, sage, powder blue, butter yellow. These read as new season without being risky, and photograph well for ecommerce.
- Statement accents — mustard, rust, cobalt, hot pink or emerald. One or two per range lift the presentation and drive social content, but they are the first to be discounted if over-ordered.
Trend forecasts are useful for choosing which accent to lean into; they are a poor guide to how much of your buy should sit in that accent. Treat the neutral base as your margin and the statement colour as your marketing.
Why "the Pantone" is not enough on its own
Pantone gives you a shared language, but a code alone does not define a saleable sweater colour. Three variables sit on top of it:
- Fibre — the same Pantone looks warmer, cooler or flatter depending on whether it dyes onto wool, cotton, cashmere or acrylic. A reference on a cotton swatch is only a starting point for a wool sweater.
- Light — showroom daylight, studio flash and a phone screen all shift a shade. Specify the light source used for approval so everyone judges under the same conditions.
- Structure — a cable knit and a flat jersey in the same yarn read as different tones because shadow changes perceived depth.
So give your supplier both a Pantone reference and a physical target — a previous garment, a fabric swatch or a lab dip you already like. Two references remove most ambiguity.
The lab dip process, step by step
A lab dip is a small dye sample produced to your target shade before bulk yarn is committed. It is the cheapest insurance in knitwear buying.
- 1. Submit references — send Pantone codes plus physical targets, and note any shade you do not want.
- 2. Mill dyes and submits — expect a dip in yarn or a small knitted swatch, usually within a few days per round.
- 3. Review in person — assess under daylight and under the store lighting you sell in. Screens lie.
- 4. Approve or comment — be specific: "make it warmer and one step lighter" moves faster than "not right".
- 5. Lock the approved standard — the signed dip becomes the bulk reference. Keep a physical copy.
Allow two to three rounds for tricky shades such as pale pastels, true reds or deep navy. Approving a dip under pressure and hoping bulk "comes close" is how you end up with a colour that does not match the range.
Colour tolerance: what to write into the order
No dye lot is mathematically identical to the standard, so the contract should state an acceptable tolerance. A common industry approach is grading colour difference with a spectrophotometer and a DE (delta E) value, where smaller numbers mean a closer match — many buyers accept around DE 1.0 for critical shades and a looser figure for accents. Agree a visual grey scale rating too, and state that bulk is assessed against the approved dip, not a screen. Confirm who bears the cost of a rejection: a well-run factory will re-dye or credit if bulk falls outside tolerance.
Shade bands, dye lots and multi-colour orders
Colour choice has a direct effect on scheduling and price, and buyers are often surprised by how much.
- More colours, higher minimums — each colourway needs its own dye lot, so a six-colour style may require six times the minimum yarn quantity of a single-colour style.
- Shade banding — where a colour runs across several dye lots, ask the mill to keep lots within an agreed band so garments from different lots are not visibly mismatched in one shipment.
- Knit order matters — knitters generally run light colours before dark ones to avoid contamination, which affects your production sequence and shipping dates.
- Consolidate where you can — sharing a yarn across two styles strengthens your buying position and reduces dye-lot risk.
Building a palette that hangs together
A coherent range is easier to sell and easier to produce. Try this: pick two neutrals, one mid tone and one accent, then specify every style within that frame. Sibling shades — two creams, two olives — give merchandisers flexibility while still dyeing from a tight family. Before you finalise, lay the physical dips next to each other, not just on a screen. If one colour fights the others, it will fight your shop floor too.
