Sweater Fabric Weight and GSM: What Buyers Should Know

GSM — grams per square metre — is the number most often quoted when buyers and factories talk about how heavy a knit should be. It is useful, but it is only half the story. Two sweaters can share the same GSM and feel completely different, because gauge and yarn count decide what the fabric is actually like. Understanding the three together is how you write a brief that gets you the sample you had in mind.
What GSM actually measures
GSM is the weight of the knitted fabric per unit of area. A higher number means more yarn per square metre, which usually means a warmer, denser garment — and a higher yarn cost. Cut-and-sewn knitwear is measured on the fabric panel; fully fashioned sweaters are usually quoted by yarn consumption and gauge, with GSM estimated from the finished panel.
The practical point: GSM is a comparison tool, not a specification on its own. It tells you how heavy a knit is, not how it will drape or feel.
GSM, yarn count and gauge work together
- Gauge — needles per inch on the knitting machine. 3GG and 5GG are chunky; 7GG and 12GG are the mid-weight workhorses; 14GG to 18GG are fine gauge.
- Yarn count — how thick the yarn is. A coarse yarn on a coarse gauge builds weight quickly; a fine yarn on a fine gauge builds a light, smooth surface.
- Stitch structure — rib, cable and jacquard use more yarn than a plain jersey stitch at the same gauge, raising the effective weight without changing the machine.
This is why the same GSM can describe two very different garments. A dense 12GG rib and a loose 5GG plain knit may weigh the same per square metre, but one is a fitted autumn top and the other is a chunky outdoor layer. Brief only on GSM and you leave the stitch — the most visible variable — to chance.
Weight bands and where they sell
Every mill draws its own lines, but the market bands are broadly consistent:
- Lightweight (roughly 150–220 GSM) — fine-gauge cottons, viscose blends and summer knits. Spring/summer ranges, layering pieces, warm-climate markets.
- Mid-weight (roughly 220–320 GSM) — the four-season core. Crew neck pullovers, polos, lightweight cardigans; the safest band for a first order.
- Heavyweight (roughly 320–450 GSM) — autumn/winter chunky knits, cable sweaters, coatigans. More yarn, more cost, higher perceived value.
- Extra heavy (above roughly 450 GSM) — outerwear-adjacent knits, oversized styles, men's heavy crews. Niche, and expensive to ship.
Treat those numbers as orientation, not law. What matters is matching the weight to the climate you are selling into and the price band you have committed to. A mid-weight knit that sells in northern Europe may sit unsold in a warmer market, and a lightweight knit sold as winter wear reads as cheap.
How weight drives cost
Yarn is the largest single cost component in most knitwear, and heavier fabric means more yarn per garment. A jump in weight therefore moves your FOB price more than almost any change short of switching fibre. Two consequences worth planning for:
- Weight and price scale together. If you need to hit a price point, the fastest lever is usually to reduce weight or move to a lighter yarn — not to negotiate finishing.
- Weight and freight scale together. Heavier sweaters cost more to ship and take more container space. On large programs this is a real line in the budget.
It cuts the other way too: a denser knit holds shape better and resists pilling, which can reduce returns and improve repeat purchase. The cheapest weight is not always the cheapest outcome.
How to brief a factory on weight
A brief that gets the right sample the first time names four things, not one:
- Gauge — for example 12GG. This sets the scale of the knit.
- Yarn — fibre and count, for example a 2/28 merino or a 2/32 cotton blend.
- Target weight or yarn consumption — a GSM figure, a garment weight in grams, or yarn consumption per piece.
- Stitch and hand feel reference — plain, rib, cable or jacquard, plus a swatch or reference garment for softness and drape.
A physical swatch, or a garment you already sell, does more than a page of numbers. If you can only send a photo, say which part matters most — the thickness, the stitch, the drape — so the mill knows what to protect when balancing cost.
Common misconceptions
- Higher GSM always means better quality. Not true. A dense, evenly knitted fine-gauge fabric can outperform a loose heavyweight knit on durability and shape retention.
- GSM alone defines the season. Stitch structure and fibre matter too — a ribbed wool knit feels warmer than a plain knit at the same weight.
- GSM is the same on every quote. Mills measure and estimate differently, so compare the gauge and yarn count behind the number.
- Weight can be changed after sampling for free. Changing weight usually means changing yarn, which can mean re-dyeing and a new sample round. Decide early.
