Sweater MOQ Explained: How Small Can Your First Order Be?

Almost every new knitwear buyer asks the same question first: what is the minimum order quantity? The honest answer is that MOQ is not a fixed rule — it is a cost calculation. Once you understand what drives a factory's minimum, you can usually negotiate it down, or structure a first order so the minimum stops being an obstacle.

Why factories set a minimum order quantity

A sweater factory does not set MOQ to be difficult. It sets it because several costs are fixed regardless of how many pieces you order.

• Yarn minimums. Spinners and yarn mills sell in set quantities per colour and quality. If your order is smaller than one yarn lot, the factory still has to buy the whole lot.
• Dyeing. Dye houses charge per dye bath, not per garment. Small quantities across many colours mean you pay near the same dyeing cost with far fewer units to absorb it.
• Machine scheduling. Knitting machines are booked in blocks. Setting up a machine for a tiny run blocks capacity the factory could sell to a larger order.
• Pattern and sampling. Development, size grading and sample making are one-time costs that have to be recovered somewhere.
• Linking, washing and finishing. These steps have setups and minimum loads too — a small batch still occupies a full shift.

Typical MOQ ranges in knitwear

As a general guide, MOQs in knitwear usually fall into these bands, though every factory and every style differs:

• Stock or ready designs — the lowest thresholds, since no new development is needed.
• Custom designs in existing yarns and colours — a moderate minimum, typically set per style and per colour.
• New designs with new yarn or dyeing — a higher minimum, because yarn and dye costs now sit inside the order.
• Special techniques — intarsia, jacquard, hand-embroidery or unusual blends push the minimum up further.

Notice the pattern: the more new elements you introduce, the higher the minimum. That single insight is the key to negotiating.

How MOQ is counted

Before comparing quotes, check what the number actually refers to. Some factories quote a minimum per style, some per colour, some per colour per size ratio. A factory quoting per style across several colours can be far more flexible than one quoting per colour. Always ask the unit: per style, per colour, or per order?

How to negotiate a lower MOQ

• Reduce the number of colours. Four colours at a low quantity each usually costs more than two colours with a higher quantity each. Start with your core colours.
• Use existing yarns. Choosing a yarn and colour your supplier already stocks avoids a new yarn lot and a new dye bath.
• Keep the size ratio simple. Fewer sizes per colour lowers the setup burden and often the minimum.
• Accept stock or near-stock designs for the first order, then customize once you reorder.
• Commit to a reorder. A supplier is far more willing to bend on the first order if a repeat is realistic.
• Be flexible on timing. Fitting a small run into a gap in the production schedule can lower the minimum, even if delivery moves.
• Ask directly. Many buyers never ask what the true minimum is — they only see the number on a price list and assume it is final.

A practical strategy for a small first order

For a new brand or a buyer testing a market, the goal is not the absolute lowest quantity — it is the lowest risk while still getting a real product to sell.

• Start with one or two proven silhouettes. A crew neck and a cardigan will teach you more about your market than six experimental styles.
• Limit colours in the first run. Two neutrals and one accent is a workable test palette.
• Spend on quality, not variety. A smaller quantity in a better yarn will sell through more convincingly than a larger quantity in a cheap one.
• Use the first order to gather data. Size ratios, colour sell-through and return reasons from a small batch should shape the next, larger order.
• Scale the colours that win. Reorder depth on proven colourways instead of adding new styles.

When the MOQ will be higher

• Custom-dyed yarn to a specific Pantone or an exclusive colour.
• Custom yarn development — a new blend, count or specialty fibre.
• Complex constructions — intarsia, jacquard, cable combinations, hand-finishing.
• Special trims or hardware — custom zips, buttons or leather patches with their own supply minimums.
• Certification or testing requirements that apply per colour or per material.

If any of these are essential to your design, plan for a higher minimum — or simplify the first order and introduce the special element later.

What to confirm with your supplier

When you request a quote, be specific about quantity, colours, sizes, yarn preference and target delivery, and ask the factory to state clearly whether the MOQ is per style, per colour or per order. Also confirm sampling cost and lead time, and whether sample charges are credited against the bulk order. Suppliers who explain the reasoning behind their minimum are usually easier to work with than those who quote a flat number.
