A Guide to Knitwear Garment Types: Pullover, Cardigan, Turtleneck & More
If you build a knitwear range for a fashion brand, a wholesale catalog or an online store, knowing the garment types — and what each one does for your customer — is the difference between a flat collection and one that sells. Here is a practical rundown of the most common knitted styles, who wears them, and how to use them across a season.
The pullover: the backbone of any line
The pullover (also called a jumper or a crewneck) is a knitted top that goes on over the head, with a crew, V or scoop neckline. It is the single most versatile knitwear item. It works as a casual layer, a smart separate, or an office staple, and it suits wool, cashmere, cotton and blends.
Pullovers carry the widest customer base and the highest volume. If you are just starting a line, a good crew or V-neck pullover in two or three weights is the safest foundation.
The cardigan: the layering workhorse
A cardigan opens at the front, with buttons, a zip, or a tie. Cardigans do double duty: closed as a top, or open as a light layer over a tee or dress. That flexibility makes them popular across autumn and spring, and they are a strong choice for transitional pieces that extend a season.
Cardigans are especially useful for knitwear brands because they add depth to a collection without adding new silhouettes — one body shape, worn more than one way.
The turtleneck: cold-weather and layering hero
The turtleneck (and its cousin, the high-neck or mock-neck) has a folded neck that covers the neck. It is inherently warm and sleek, so it reads as more tailored and elegant. Turtlenecks are a winter best-seller and look equally strong on their own or layered under a coat or blazer.
A knit high-neck in a fine gauge is a premium item; in a chunky gauge it becomes a cozy cold-weather piece. Both sell well in premium and mid markets.
The knitted polo: the smart-casual bridge
A knitted polo combines a shirt-style collar with knit fabric. It bridges the gap between a formal shirt and a casual sweater, which makes it popular in men's and unisex lines and in premium casualwear. Knitted polos work well in short or long sleeve, and in fine cotton or wool blends.
The sleeveless knit vest
A sleeveless knit — a vest, a knitted tank, or a layering piece — is great for warmer weather and for layering. Knitted tanks breathe and are lighter than a full sweater, so they are a good way to keep knitwear in your offering when the temperature rises. Layered vests over a shirt also bring texture and warmth without bulk.
Knitted dresses and skirt sets
Knitted dresses — fitted, ribbed, halter, or wrap styles — have become a statement category, especially in women's collections. They move with the body, photograph well, and carry a higher perceived value for a comparatively simple construction. A knit skirt, or a matching top-and-skirt set, gives you a complete look rather than a single piece.
Scarves, hats and accessories
Knitted accessories — scarves, beanies, snoods and mittens — are lower-cost items that round out a range and add gift-ready units. They are a good place to absorb leftover yarn, offer a lower price point, and build brand awareness. For a wholesaler they help fill an order.
How to build a balanced SKU range
- Cover the base: a crew or V-neck pullover in a couple of weights.
- Add a layer: a cardigan for transitional and in-between seasons.
- Offer a statement: a turtleneck or a knitted dress for premium moments.
- Fill the gaps: a polo or vest for smart-casual and warmer weather.
- Round it out: scarves and beanies for lower price points and gifting.
Two categories that sit outside the standard sweater list are covered in our notes on knitted vests and co-ords.
The bottom half of a knitwear range is often overlooked, and our guide to knitted skirts and bottoms explains why it is worth the development.
Ribbed knits behave differently from plain jersey, and our notes on ribbed knit tops cover the implications.
Knitted polos are a category in their own right, covered in our knitted polos buyer's guide.
Menswear follows its own conventions, set out in our guide to men’s knitwear styles.
The womenswear equivalents are covered in our guide to women’s sweater styles.
