Selling Knitwear in the US Market: A Buyer's Guide
Views: 0
The United States is one of the largest knitwear markets in the world, but it rewards buyers who understand its specific expectations. Sizing runs larger than much of Europe and Asia, colours and fits skew differently by region, and compliance and labelling requirements are strict. Here is what to keep in mind when sourcing sweaters for American customers.
Sizing runs larger — plan your grading accordingly
US sizing is generally more generous than European or Asian equivalents. A "medium" that fits well in the US may map to a large in some European size charts. If you are sourcing for the US market, start from a US size spec rather than converting from an Asian base size, and confirm your supplier can grade up to plus sizes, which are a meaningful part of American apparel demand.
- Base your fit on US body measurements, not converted charts.
- Include XL and plus sizes in the initial size ratio.
- Allow for longer sleeve and body lengths than European equivalents.
Style and colour preferences
US knitwear demand is broad and regional. Coastal and urban markets lean toward trend-led, fashion-forward pieces and bolder colour. The middle of the country often favours classic, value-driven basics — crewnecks, cardigans and pullovers in neutrals and seasonally safe colours. A practical approach is to build a core of reliable basics and add a smaller number of trend styles.
Holiday and gifting seasons matter a great deal in the US, which means autumn/winter knitwear programs need to be on shelves and online well before late November.
Labelling and compliance
The US has specific requirements that buyers should confirm with their supplier before production.
- Fibre content and country of origin must be labelled accurately.
- Care instructions should follow recognised US care labelling practice.
- Children's knitwear is subject to stricter rules on small parts, cords and flammability.
- State-level rules (such as chemical and packaging requirements) can add obligations.
Ask your supplier to confirm they can produce compliant labels and, where relevant, supply test reports through a recognised third-party lab.
Season timing and reorders
US autumn/winter knitwear typically starts landing from late summer, with reorders running through the winter. Spring knitwear occupies a smaller but real window for lightweight cotton and fine-gauge pieces. Because reorder speed matters in the US — customers move quickly — confirm your supplier's capability to repeat a style with consistent colour and yarn before you commit to a line.
Working with an export-focused supplier
Sourcing for the US is smoother with a supplier who already exports there and understands the documentation, labelling and inspection expectations. Our partner factories are certified (BSCI / SEDEX / Oeko-Tex) and welcome audits, and we support full inspection or third-party inspection (such as SGS or BV) before shipment.
Our OEM/ODM programs cover US size grading, custom colours, private label and packaging, with flexible MOQ for testing a style before scaling.
